Giants Sweep Pirates and Walk Away With 2B Freddy Sanchez Too!

Well, well, well….it looks like Brian Sabean is hard at work after all, huh?  After weeks and weeks of screaming for offensive help, the fans finally got a little taste of what Sabean had been working on, and yes, Madison Bumgarner and Buster Posey are still property of the Giants.

Just a day and a half removed from acquiring Ryan Garko from the Indians, the Giants made another splash in the trade pool as they dealt pitching prospect Tim Alderson to the Pirates for two time batting champion Freddy Sanchez, filling a major whole over at second base.  Not that Juan Uribe is a liability, but I think we’re all best served if he goes and supplants Edgar Renteria over at short.

The Giants might not have boosted their power totals with the addition of Sanchez, but they will certainly increase their run production.  Sanchez, a career .300 hitter, had been batting .296 with 6 HR, 45 runs scored, 34 RBI and 5 stolen bases for a crappy Pirates club and now moves over to a contender where he will likely hit in the two-hole, right in front of the .300+ hitting Pablo Sandoval.  With the two of them setting the table for Bengie Molina and Garko, it looks like the Giants will finally start plating some runs with a little more regularity.

The Giants gave up a great prospect in Alderson, but it was certainly a necessary move.  While he would have likely been a decent late season call-up to bolster the iffy back end of our rotation, I don’t think he would have been a difference-maker in our quest to reach the playoffs this year.  Somehwere down the road he’s going to be a solid starter, but that will have to be with another club.  And if the Giants were ever worried about Alderson coming back to bite them in the ***, well they sure took care of that by dealing him to the worst possible team for developing young arms.  When was the last time you heard of a big time pitcher in Pittsburgh?  Exactly.

So kudos to the Giants for making the right move here.  The additions of Garko and Sanchez will certainly bolster ourt lineup and I think we’re just one piece away now.  We need to fix left field.  Fred Lewis is a disaster and as much as I like what Nate Schierholtz is doing, he’s certainly not the answer for our playoff run.

Just one more step, Brian.  One more step.

It’s the Little Things

As we finish off our sweep of the Pirates and brace ourselves for the juggernaut that is the Phillies, I just want to point out that yesterday’s 1-0 victory might never had happened if not for the plate discipline exhibited by Andres Torres in the 10th inning.  With one out and the speedy Eugenio Velez on second, Torres worked the count to 3-0.  I’ll admit that with the way the Giants usually play, I was cringing that this kid was going to take the opportunity to try and be a hero and swing away despite coaches telling him to keep the bat on his shoulders.

Well, Torres took the next pitch, fouled off the pitch after that and then failed to bite on Pirates closer Matt Capps’ go-to pitch, an inside slider in the dirt.  Torres drew the walk and then happily joined the celebration as Randy Winn knocked in the winning run in the following at bat.

Good job, Andres.  We appreciate the work.

So We Won One…Big Deal

I wish I could say that I was less cranky and less disgusted than I was yesterday, but the 5-1 victory over the Braves and the fantastic outing by Barry Zito are, once again, eclipsed by the fact that other teams are bolstering their squads to make a playoff run and I’ve barely heard anything other than Brian Sabean saying, “We’re talking to everyone right now.”

Who’s everyone?  Give me some damn specifics, will ya?  I woke up this morning to find that the Cardinals have now acquired Matt Holliday from the A’s for a pair of highly touted prospects and we’re off yammering about what…?  That we won a game yesterday?  Puh-leeeeeze!!  Let’s see what happens in the series against the Rockies this weekend (the Rockies who shored up their bullpen by acquiring Rafael Betancourt from the Indians yesterday).

I gots some sad sad news for you, Giants fans.  With the media coverage these days, if Sabean were really talking to people…and I mean seriously talking to people….we would have heard something.  Go to ESPN.com and check out the “rumors” section.  It gives you every little detail about trade possibilities, who’s available and who’s interested, and I’m sorry, but I don’t see the Giants anywhere on the page.  This could be a very disheartening second half.

The bottom line is, the longer Sabean waits, the harder it’s going to be to get a deal done.  Other teams are acting now and they’re acting fast.  I understand that we don’t want to trade away Madison Bumgarner, but look at our system.  Guys like Angel Villalona, Tim Alderson, Jesus Guzman….they might be of quality, but are they irreplaceable?  No.  And how many times have we seen “can’t miss” prospects turn into busts in the majors?

And I’ll tell you this, if it means scooping up Roy Halladay from the Blue Jays, then I see no problem shipping out Bumgarner.  You sign Halladay to a 5 year extenson and you’re locking in the best 3 man rotation in I don’t know how long.  There’s no guarantee that this 19 year old prospect is going to be the next Tim Lincecum, but you do know that Halladay is the best in the game and has a good number of years left.

Come on Sabean.  Get something done.  Fred Lewis, Jonathan Sanchez and Villalona for Jermaine Dye and Mark Buehrle (yes, they are shopping the man who threw a perfect game yesterday) and then Bumgarner, Alderson and Guzman for Halladay.  Might sound far-fetched, but it’s a pretty good starting point, don’tcha think?  And who cares if these kids amount to anything?  They’ll be in Toronto and Chicago in the American League anyway.  We can worry about them in the World Series in 10 years.  Let’s worry about the 2009 World Series now.  There’s no shame in mortgaging a chunk of the future if it means winning today.

Giants Split Last Two With Nats

There was an interesting buzz amongst the crowd today as the Giants stepped up to bat in the bottom of the ninth, down 6-2.  It was nothing I’ve felt in my three years out here in San Francisco.  People actually believed.  Amazing.  With the Giants trailing by four runs, there was still belief and hope that the game wasn’t over.  After all, the night before, the Giants came back from a 7-5 hole in the 8th to win it all with a 3 run shot from Pablo Sandoval in the bottom of the final frame.

Nate Schierholtz, getting a rare start in place of Fred Lewis, stepped up to the plate and dug in.  He took the first 4 pitches he saw foul and then ripped a triple to deep right field.  The crowd sizzled.  Then, pinch hitting, Lewis finished an 8 pitch at bat with a double to left center that easily plated Schierholtz.  The Giants were now only down by three and there was a sense that they just might do it again.

I’d love to give you the storybook ending here, but it just wasn’t meant to be.  Rich Aurilia struck out on 3 pitches, Emmanuel Burriss took one pitch and then hit an excuse-me grounder to short, and Edgar Renteria popped up the first pitch he saw to end the game and the Giants’ hopes for another come from behind victory.

Nothing like a little reality, huh folks?  You know what they say…”you can’t win ‘em all.”.  So the Giants have to settle for 2 of 3 in yet another series, but I don’t hear anyone complaining.  And why should they?  The Giants have a lost a series since that debacle down in Chavez Ravine back in mid April (the 16th to be precise), and there’s plenty to enjoy.  Sweating a loss to the Nats is not going to ruin what’s been going on as of late.

We all know my thoughts on the Giants needing a big bat for that 4 hole and my concern about the back end of the roatation.  So I’m not going to get into that.  Instead, I’m going to focus on some of the positives we’ve seen.

Like, how about the way Barry Zito is pitching?  Today’s 6.1 IP with 4 ER was his worst start in his last 4, and he didn’t even look that bad.  No, he didn’t have that same intensity in the first inning that I’ve seen over the last few starts, but he still pitched well.  Yes, he gave up 8 hits, but if you look at the Nats lately, their record may stink, but their offense has plated 46 runs in the last 7 games and only once in that span did they score fewer than 5 runs in a single game.  They are a tough hitting club and Zito did well with them.

His pitching has been nothing but inspirational for the team.  It could have been real easy for Zito to just phone it in and collect the rest of his ridiculous contract, but he chose to go the other way and prove the critics wrong.  It may only be May, but so far, he’s done it.  He has pitched like a champ and you can tell that it’s rubbing off on the team.  Hell, it’s even rubbing off on the fans who suddenly find themselves chanting his name is admiration rather than ridicule.

We can also look at how the supporting cast is trying to make it easier for Bengie Molina and Pablo Sandoval.  For the most part, if Molina or Sandoval didn’t produce, neither did the rest of the team.  But suddenly we’re getting some action out of Randy Winn and Travis Ishikawa with continued support from Edgar Renteria.  Even Burriss has raised his average almost 100 points as he has hit safely in 9 of his 13 May games — 7 of those being multi-hit games.

And did you know that the Giants have stepped out of last place in the majors in runs scored?  Two teams are worse than them now.

Our hitting is improving, our pitching is staying solid….for the most part (I’ll start with swapping Jonathan Sanchez for a hitter and bringing up Tim Alderson in a little while), and our bullpen is holding it together.  The Giants are winning ball games, playing with a fire and intensity long missed, and there’s excitement in the air.

The upcoming series with the Mets should be a good one to re-test their mettle, but for now, there’s nothing wrong with your Giants.
