Can We Call for a Do-Over?

This is gettin’ ugly, folks.  We’re not even a full week into the second half of the season and we’re already now 9 1/2 games behind the Dodgers and still a half game behind the Rockies in the Wild Card standings.  What’s going on with us here?  It’s not like we’re facing the cream of the crop, hell, we’re gettin’ squirreled by the bottom of the barrel.

Losing 2 of 3 to Pittsburgh was bad enough, but now the Braves are making us look like….well, you know the word I’m looking for here.  We’ve dropped the first two and can only hope for a split in the series.  That is, of course, if we can eke out a pair of wins before we have to deal with the surging Rockies.

We’ve got Tim Lincecum going for us today, but after seeing what our offense has looked like since the Break, I don’t know if little Timmy can do it all on his own.  Remember the gem he tossed the first game back from the Break.  The only thing that him starting that day meant that the Pirates needed a few extra innings to kick us to the curb.  It’s downright embarrassing.  Especially for a team who says they don’t need another bat and they don’t want to screw up their team chemistry.  Give me a break!

The season doesn’t end until the 4th of October this year (Thanksgiving and the World Series at my house this year!) and we’ve got a long long way to go.  It’s obvious that we can’t rely on our own hitters for consistency, so let’s get some damed help in here!  Not to mention, we’re also dealing with some bumps and bruises and the depth that we have is atrocious.

Aaron Rowand is banged up so Andres Torres is filling in with his equally punchless bat — ok, Torres has been solid so far, but is that really who we want to lean on when we need a clutch hit?  We’re also dealing with throwing that useless meat sack Rich Aurilia on the DL and who do we have to fill in?  Kevin Frandsen just got shipped back out so we can bring up the .196-hitting Matt Downs?  Yuck!  Bengie Molina and Pablo Sandoval are carrying far too much weight (literal, not proverbial) to not start breaking down, Edgar Renteria is moving up in years, and we’re still testing out whether or not John Bowker can be a major leaguer?

And we’re worried about clubhouse chemistry???

I don’t even know what to say anymore.  It’s just awful to watch a team with so much potential unravel while it’s management sits idle and does nothing to help.  We’ve lost 4 of our first 5 in the second half and we need to do something to stop the bleeding.  You folks know what I want…..I know what you want……someone needs to get this team onto our page and it needs to be done fast.

Unless someone just lets me call a do-over…..

Don’t Look Now Giants, But Here Comes Colorado

I’m having these horrible April flashbacks right now….only worse.  Because instead of just dropping the first bunch of games on the road and falling 3 or 4 games behind the Dodgers, we’re now dropping games and falling behind by 8 1/2.  But the added kick in the proverbial groin is that we’re now sitting 1/2 game behind the Colorado Rockies!

Yup, that’s right!  If the playoffs started today, we’d be on the outside looking in;  wondering what the heck happened to us as we failed to win against the lesser NL teams while the Rockies continue to win the games the supposed to….and even the one’s they’re not.  While we’ve now gone 8-8 for the month of July, dropping games to the Padres, Astros, Pirates and Braves, the Rockies have surged past us going 10-6 in July after a ridiculous 21-7 June.  We were 17-10 for the month of June.

The time to act is now.  We can’t afford to put ourselves in any kind of a deeper hole in the division and we certainly can’t afford to be giving up our spot in the Wild Card standings.  After all, it’s not just how we finish, but how the 6 other teams in contention fare as well.  We need to right this ship and we need to do it now.

I’m not saying panic here….not by any means.  But the fact of the matter is that we know, and have known for a while, exactly what we need to put ourselves on the right path towards the playoffs.  No more of this waiting around crap.  There are bats out there to be had and there are middling arms better than Jonathan Sanchez to be gotten as well.

And I don’t want to hear about Sanchez’ no-hitter and how last night’s loss wasn’t his fault;  that he pitched a decent game.  I love when that happens.  A guy does something magical and all else seems to be forgotten.  Anyone ever hear of the expression about the sun shining on a dog’s *** atleast once?  As great as that no-hitter was and as decent as he looked in yesterday’s game (and believe me, it wasn’t all that decent — he blew a 2-0 lead after giving up home run shots to the Geritol-infused Garrett Anderson and Chipper Jones and barely walked away with the no decision after the Giants finally tied it up in the 7th), the time to trade Sanchez is now.  Now, while he still has value.  All it’s gonna take is one 3 1/3 IP with 7 ER to jog other GMs’ memories as to who this clown really is.

The non-waiver trade deadline is in 10 days and we need to get cracking.  Brian Sabean needs to stop waiting for the ice to be broken by someone else and he needs to start getting a little more aggressive.  There are plenty of bats out there right now that can be had for less than the price of Tim Alderson or Madison Bumgarner.  He should be exploring those options.  Check the White Sox again….definitely going to be sellers.  How about the Indians?  Or the A’s?  The Reds maybe?

If the Giants are going to fend off teams like the Rockies or the Cubs or the Brewers even, they’re going to need to bump up that offense.  Sure, last night’s debacle can be pinned on Sergio Romo, but the kid’s been money so far that a slip up was bound to happen.  But the fact that we could only muster 3 measley little runs (7 runs in the last 4 games) speaks volumes.

We’re not going to be able to count on Nate Schierholtz to be our power guy when Bengie Molina and Pablo Sandoval are slumping.  It’s just not gonna happen.  Same with guys like Juan Uribe and Edgar Renteria.  They’re not power guys.  And John Bowker?  Come on, man!  He’s certainly not the answer…..and we knew that last season.

We have 10 days and counting before I really start lashing out.  I don’t care if we go on to win the next 10 games in a row.  We (and by we here, I mean Sabean) need to get it together and make a move.  It’s the only thing that’s going to give us a fighting chance.  Colorado has just passed us on the outside track and if we’re not careful, the upcoming 3 game set with them this weekend could be the beginnings of the coffin being nailed.

If you’re out there, Brian, and you’re listening, do us a solid and bring us something good!   You know we need it, I know we need it, the fans know we need it, and deep down, so do the players.  Ditch the whole “clubhouse chemistry” crap.  One guy ain’t gonna kill us….unless it’s Barry.  DO the right thing and bring us a bat!
